WHITFIELD COUNTY, Georgia(WDEF) - Whitfield County authorities are investigating a gruesome discovery inside a gas station.

Investigators say a customer walked into Kanku's Express on the 3300 block of Airport Rd. and found the clerk on the floor dead.

A combination of evidence at the scene and surveillance video leads authorities to believe the clerk was the victim of a robbery homicide.

"I would say it's pretty shocking for this area. It's pretty quiet," said Lloyd Dale who is a regular customer

Detectives have not publicly identified the victim but close friends of the clerk say he is from India and goes by the name DK. Friends say he came to the U.S. two years ago and had only been living in Dalton for a couple of months.

"He was a good guy. He was trying to survive with his work. He was living pay check to pay check and he was a hard worker," said Jay Chaudhrey who knows DK and his family in India.

Chaudhrey believes DK was sending part of his pay checks back home to India to help support his family.

WDEF also spoke to regular customers who all say DK was a very laid back and approachable person who was easy to strike up a conversation with.

"I usually come to the store to to buy cigarettes and I knew that guy well because I use to talk to him," said Edward Corneojo

Authorities do not have a suspect in custody nor have they released a description of a suspect or the type of weapon used in the crime. Investigators are not granting television interviews and the sheriff was unavailable for comment.
