Officers in three counties in two states continue piecing-together last night's shooting incident involving a Chickamauga Police Sergeant.

The shooter is not from this area and neither were the two people in his car.
Investigators say there were no drugs, and no alcohol involved.
And, and the suspect had no police record.
So, the question remains: why did he do it?

About 5 o'clock Thursday, Chickamauga police officers Kenny Evans and Sgt. Ira Taylor were responding to a 911 call in the 100 block of Wilder road.

CHIEF MICHAEL HANEY, CHICKAMAUGA POLICE DEPT. "Its what we call a rolling domestic..where the argument is happening inside the vehicle..just driving down the road arguing with each other."

It was the second time they had spoken to the 24 year old driver, Michael Anthony Brooks of Lindale, California, and the two people in his car. They were a 26 year old woman and a 5 year old man.
As they talked officer Evans pulled his taser and Brooks lunged at him..

CHIEF MICHAEL HANEY, CHICKAMAUGA POLICE DEPT. "Apparently somehow or another, he knocked the cartridge loose from the tazer...and was able to pull the gun from the officer's holster at the same time." "In the process, he started shooting off rounds, and one of the rounds strikes Ira Taylor in the leg."

Sgt. Taylor is a 49 year old veteran officer who tells us by phone that the bullet did not penetrate his knee-cap. He was treated and released from the hospital...but he will require a few days to recover.
The chief says Brooks fired 5 shots...one of which lodged in the back door of the patrol car.
Brooks meanwhile..led Walker county and Georgia Patrol officers on a chase.
He car-jacked another car on three Notch road and ended up on I-75 near the East Ridge exit.

CPL. ROBERT WADE, EAST RIDGE POLICE "When our officers got on the scene, the Georgia officers already had him hands on him..our officers assisted in getting him into custody..he was very combative."

East Ridge has several charges against Brooks, in addition to those filed in Georgia.
Brooks is in the Hamilton county jail awaiting extradition.
That chase and apprehension near the East Ridge exit of I-75 blocked northbound traffic for more than an hour .

Michael Anthony Brooks from California will like be in this part of the country for some time.
Walker county sheriff Steve Wilson says he has 9 felony warrants against him, while Catoosa county is expected to add carjacking charges.
He's held on a 150-thousand dollar bond.
