In 1998, Whitwell Middle School principal Linda Hooper started an after school study of the Holocaust and the 6 million people killed during that time.
Out of that study came an amazing idea.
"One of them came to me and said 'I don't get 6 million, I can't visualize that, can we collect something?'" said Hooper.
They chose paper clips, and at first had a slow start, until a Washington Post journalist featured them in a story.
People all over the world sent paper clips to Whitwell, now featured in the Childrens Holocaust memorial at the school
USA Network and Charter chose Hooper out of hundreds of nominations to be one of their Characters Unite recipients, and presented her with a $5,000 grant.
Still Hooper remains humble and says she owes it to everyone that helped.
"This community and these children deserve this award."

I'm sure the Whitwell Principal would flunk the writer of this article's headline who can't even spell "receives" (or use spell-check)! Remember your teacher telling you - "i" before "e" except before "c".
