When a teacher pushes a student to be better, that student will often achieve more than they thought they could.

One Hamilton County English teacher won't settle for mediocre...

Lee Ann McBryar is this week's Golden Apple Award winner...

The library at Central High School is busy as students prepare for their junior research paper...

It's Lee Ann McBryar's Junior English Class and if you try to just slide by... You'll get busted.

Junior Savanna Green says, "I feel like she expects us to do our best."

The 6 year English teacher wants each of her students to strive for excellence... And she tries to motivate them to do it, "I'm not doing my job if children aren't succeeding."

Watching her students do well is one of her biggest rewards.

Senior Brandon Rogers reads from his Golden Apple nomination letter, "I have never seen a teacher so happy and enthusiastic about her students and their success in school and in life."

Last year Brandon was in Ms. McBryar's Honors English class.

He says the teacher's disappointment when he did poorly forced him to try harder.

His letter continues, "I started doing my work and turning things in on time. Now I'm a senior graduating in May with a 3.4 Average."

Brandon says Ms. McBryar shows that same interest in each of her kids, "She'll talk to them. She'll be like 'you need to do this, this, and this' and she'll do whatever she can to get them to that place where they need to be or she knows they can be."

That's because Ms. McBryar takes it personally when a student doesn't achieve.

She says each child has the potential to do well.... And it's her job to inspire them to be their best, "I have to find a way to help them. And if they'll meet me in the middle then I can always find a way to help them be successful."
