Getting to know each of your students and their inidvidual learning styles, can often be a challenge...

But one lucky teacher at Daisy Elementary has a formed a relationship with each student and says that makes her classroom a family.

Michelle Stiles is this week's Golden Apple Award winner.

Ms. Stiles says to a table of 3rd graders, "The answer is going to be in our story..."

It's TCAP study time and her students are learning to break down their reading lessons.

The 9 year veteran teacher had most of her current students last year.

She says watching their understanding grow has been its own reward, "All this stuff we introduced in 2nd grade and now in 3rd grade we're doing it again and we're doing more of it and then they'll of a sudden 'oh yeah, I see what that means now.'"

For one little boy the two year relationship with his teacher is a perfect fit

Gabriel Armstrong reads from his Golden Apple nomination letter, "She is sweet as sweettarts and never shouts. She speaks softly."

The eight year old says Ms. Stiles is his favorite teacher so far.

He says she keeps the class inline, but isn't too strict. Plus, she keeps the lessons interesting.

Gabriel says of a recent lesson using the letters in your name to compose thoughts about our solar system, "Like science...doing that planet thing was a lot more fun than just writing a bunch of sentences about space."

Ms. Stiles says all the individual personalities in her class keep every day fresh, "Teaching is never boring. It's always new and different and exciting and that's what I like best about the job. 'Cause you just don't know what to expect."

Stiles uses a lot of small group learning to teach to each child.

She's formed close connection with her students and says understanding each mind, means being a better teacher, "I think about them when I'm not here and you worry about them. You really do form a strong bond with them and you love them."
