Tough, but forgiving.  That's how CSAS students describe Carmen Veller.

The English teacher believes there are no shortcuts to learning, and trains her classes to develop stamina in reading and writing.

This award doesn't even come close to recognizing the immense impact Ms. Veller has on her students. Her class is absolutely life changing in a way that I don't think most students realize until after they have left CSAS (myself included). I still keep the post-it note she taped to the inside of my notebook that says "I am a good writer" to remind me to have confidence in my ability. That note and her unwavering faith in me has never left. It has carried me through the toughest of edits in both my undergraduate and graduate careers, and I can say without a doubt that I wouldn't be on my way to a PhD without her. Thank you Ms. Veller, for your passion and love for literature, teaching, and learning.
