New Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke has long pushed his plan to promote public safety, and economic and youth development.
It started with shifting focus of city departments on Tuesday.
City council approved his proposals to combine the Parks and Rec Department with Human Services to become Youth Services, changing Neighborhood services to Economic for community development, creating the department of transportation, and doing away with the Education arts and culture department.
Workers crowding the council meeting were most concerned with how all this will affect their jobs under those departments.
Mayor Berke wouldn't directly address how the changes will influence jobs.
"The services we have are gonna continue, we're going to make sure they are put in the best and most effective way so we can deliver at the lowest cost to taxpayers, that which we do today, but even better," Mayor Berke said.
Since the department heads were asked to resign and reapply before Berke's administration began, the Mayor will also have to assign those positions.
"The responsibility the department heads are going to have will be greater and will have a better ability to effect change," said Mayor Berke.
The council didn't have any discussion about the changes before their vote.
They will now move onto the task of approving a budget for the newly designed departments.
