Ft. Oglethorpe residents still want their Mayor out of office and came to hear his explanations for the firing of two city employees and resignation of one.
He confirmed in the Press Conference that Public Works director Jeff Long was fired over conflict of interest with the city.
Jeff Long is also a county commissioner and motioned for the de-annexation of 42 acres of the city's land in February..
"Without that vote, that would've not passed, state legislature could not acted on it and consequently the city, the taxpayers would not have to replace that 11 thousand 31 dollars and whatever pennies it might be," said Mayor Long.
Long's son Jonathan says that's not a good enough reason to let go an 19 year employee of the city.
"My dad is a councilman, his duty is not only to the citizens of Ft. Oglethorpe, but to the entire county, so he has to look out for their best interest," said Long.
The Mayor wouldn't go into why Police Chief David Eubanks was fired, saying it was a personnel issue.
He had a hard time explaining why the interim city manager fired employees minutes after being appointed, when their former city manager would not.
The crowd was so frustrated by his responses, many of them walked out.
The most direct answer the Mayor gave to the question was,
"You'll have to ask Mr. Goulart that."
The residents said they just weren't impressed with the Mayor's answers.
"There just were no real clear answers given and if you are the one calling a press conference, then certainly you should be bright enough to know that questions area gonna be asked of you and you need to answer them," said resident Chris McKeever.
