(WDEF)  East Ridge's state representative throws his hat into a different political arena.
Vince Dean announced his run for Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk.
He made the formal statement Wednesday on the county courthouse steps.
Dean will run as a Republican in the May 6th primary.
If he wins he'll face incumbent Gwen Tidwell in the August election.
Tidwell's held the post for nearly two decades.
In an interview after his announcement Dean said, "I see that we need some expertise, we need someone who will actually take charge of the office and someone who will guard the taxpayer dollars."
He added, "During my 27 years in law enforcement I was in and out of the courts day in and and out and I'm very familiar with the court system and the clerk's office."
Dean served in the Tennessee State Legislature since 2006.
He was appointed chair of the House Transportation Committee this year.
