CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) -The next time your child has surgery at Children's Hospital, the procedure will take place in a brand new operating room that's been called the "Star Trek" of operating rooms.

The new operating room at Children's Hospital is so technologically advanced that virtually every light, electrical surgical equipment, and even cameras are all integrated into one computer. The same computer also helps nurses and surgeons prep for surgery by making sure all legal documents have been signed and that registration is accurately completed. It's all controlled by a single touch screen.

"While I'm doing what I do surgically, my team can help the patient by being able to sit at the desk and manage my equipment. They don't have to get up and move around which can contaminant our sterile fields," said Dr. Curt Koontz.

"This really allows everybody to view what's going on and helps the nurses to see what's going on and what they need and anticipate what the doctor needs," said Children's Hospital CEO Alan Kohrt.

The integrated operating room was built by Stryker Communications which is one of the world's leading medical technology companies. One of their specialties is in-light surgical cameras.

"There's an in-light camera in the LED surgical light which can be zoomed in and focused. Pictures and video can be recorded from here. Beyond just the cameras in the room anything that's integrated to the room can also be routed through the room to any display or captured," said Stryker Communications manager Sam Widdifield.

The operating room has plenty of camera's and monitors to capture and view the action from every angle one can imagine.

"It's more like the Star Trek of OR Rooms. It's very technologically advanced," Widdifield sid.

Children's Hospital at Erlanger is only the third Children's Hospital in the nation to have an integrated operating room of this kind.

"We teach the future pediatricians for tomorrow. We had to have the best and the most state of the art equipment so we can really provide the highest level of medical care in an academic setting," said Erlnger CEO and president Kevin Spiegel.

The hi-tech operating room inside Children's hospital is only two weeks old.
