Hello, I'm Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses. First up,
Mexican Cooking Sauces
Traditional Chipotle Flavor.
I happen to love chipotle and and this sauce has a good burn, but frankly isn't thick enough and has practically no mouth feel. This sauce is just all about the burn, there's a touch of smoky flavor, but frankly this recipe needs a lot more work. Retails for $3.29 for 12 oz. Total Score is 80.
If you like Red Hots you are going to love these even more! Slightly larger, softer and much more flavorful, these candies contain real cinnamon oil. Remember it's still candy - each heart is about 10 calories and just under 2 grams of sugars. So enjoy - but only a few! Retails for $2.79 for 9 oz Total Score is 81.
Peanut Butter Crunch
and it's our first hit.
This bar is a lot better than its name. Designer Whey? Come on that's not a name for a food… This bar is absolutely delicious, coming in at 160 calories, 10 grams of protein, with 14 grams of sugars and 5 grams of fat. The recipe is terrific with the peanut butter flavor and crunch coming through loud and clear. Retails for $1.59 for 1.41 oz. Total Score is 88.
Chick Pea Snacks
Sea Salt Flavor
In the ultimate search for protein it's the time of the chick pea. When I was growing up chick peas were served at Rapoport's restaurant on the lower east side. Who knew that in 2013 THESE CHICK PEAS would be competing with chips as a snack. Half a bag, which is a lot , is just 150 calories and has 7 grams of protein. These are crunchy, satisfying and delicious. Retails for $2.69 for 2.5 oz. Total Score is 88.
Organic Energy Bar
Berry Berry Flavor
is our hit of the week.
Yes it's another fruit and nut energy bar - and another one that is delicious! Very fresh tasting with a recipe of almonds, pumpkin seeds, figs and bananas, along with lots of other berries, each bar is just 11 grams of fat with 6 grams of protein, but has 17 grams of sugars, both naturally occurring from the fruits and from the added sugars. Retails for $2.85 for 1.7 oz. Total score is 90.
