9 Flavors of Macaron.
Don't compare these with a macaroon - there's nothing even similar. This is a sandwich of two almond meringue shells which are very light, with nine different fillings: vanilla, passion fruit, caramel, matcha green tea, dark chocolate, coconut. raspberry, espresso and pistachio. This is clearly for indulgence, one macaron is 110 calories. 6 grams of fat and 11 grams of sugars, but a terrific treat. These are hand made at the Macaron Cafe in New York City. Look for them in the frozen food case and all you have to do is let them defrost for 30 minutes. These are naturally gluten free. Retails for $14.95 for 8.8 oz - 9 pieces. Total Score is 83.
Complete Nutrition Bar
Cashew Cranberry Orange
is a hit.
Yet another nutrition bar but the flavor of this one is excellent, it has 7 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein. It is certified gluten free and is delicious. This is one of those bars that isn't crunchy, and has the consistency more like the inside of a Fig Newton but more dense. The flavor itself is great - but I neither tasted cashew, cranberry or orange. Two complaints however, one is that it is really hard to read the ingredients because of the type size and color contrast, the other one is that it says 'created by nutritionists', however nutritionists are not the same as RDs and do not have to be certified so what are we to believe? Retails for $2.69 for 1.76 oz. Total Score is 85.
Skinny & Co
Unrefined Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
is a hit.
This coconut oil is more solid than it is liquid, it has a wonderful coconut flavor, which makes me wonder how it would affect the flavor of foods cooked in it. according to the package, is hand packed and never heated. One tablespoon is 130 calories and like all oils, 14 grams of fat. Imported from Vietnam this oil has a smoking point of around 350 degrees, similar to butter and lard, so it should be used for cooking in similar ways, and not on the highest heat. Retails for $25.00 for 16.7 oz. Total Score is 86.
Milton's Craft Bakers
Honey & Corn Baked Snack Crackers
is a hit.
These crackers are terrific, just a little over 7 calories each. There is 4 grams of fat and 4 grams of sugar per serving which is about 17 crackers. These crackers are so flavorful you'd better choose your toppings carefully so that the honey and corn flavor doesn't interfere. The cracker itself is not as crispy as you might expect, and has a texture that's similar to a Graham Cracker. Retails for 3.99 for 6.5 oz. Total Score is 87.
is the hit of the week.
There have been blends of frozen vegetables before, but what I really like about this one is the combination - corn, black beans, poblano peppers, red peppers and onions. There's no salt, sugar or sauce added, which is great, so, season to taste. The flavor of the corn and black beans overpower the peppers. One recommendation to make it even better - pack it in a steam-able microwave bag! Now you have to add water and cook on the stove top.
Retails for $2.59 for 12 oz. Total Score is 90.
