I'm Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses.
First up, Oatworks
Oat-Powered Natural Smoothie
Strawberry Banana Flavor
is a miss.
Typically a smoothie is made from fresh or frozen fruit. This one, even though the flavor is Strawberry Banana, is made from water, strawberry puree, apple juice, pear juice and banana puree mixed in with oat soluble fiber. Before you get too excited, one bottle only contains 2 grams of soluble fiber, but does have 32 grams of naturally occurring sugars. I taste more of the apple flavor than I do strawberry or banana. The label is confusing - it says that one bottle has as much soluble fiber as 2 bowls of oatmeal, but 1 cup of cooked oatmeal has about the same amount as they list on their nutritional facts label for one bottle. Compared with other smoothies in the category the good news is this product contains just 20 mg of sodium, versus the average of 165. Retails for $3.49 for 12 fl oz. Total Score is 72.
Opening up this container you immediately get a fabulous garlic aroma, but tasting it is a different story. The lemon overpowers the garlic. The recipe base is vegan stock and is both gluten and dairy free. 1/4 of this container is just 70 calories and almost half the average sodium in the cooking sauce category. However there is 18 grams of fat in this one 10 ounce container. I like that they put a QR code on the package to quickly get recipes; but more garlic flavor please! Retails for $3.49 for 10 oz. Total Score is 80.
MixtBag Yellow & Blue Tortilla Chips
Sweet & Spicy Salsa.
I really like the idea of having both yellow and blue tortilla chips in the same bag. The crunch is perfect and the taste is delicious, but make sure you shake the bag upside down to get the full flavor of the spices on all the chips, otherwise there's very little spice and very little salsa flavor. The good news is that there's only 6 grams of fat in about 15 chips and only 80 mg of sodium as compared to the category average for tortilla chips which has 174 mg and some even have as high as 420.
Retails for $3.69 for 14 oz. Total Score is 84.
Organic Chia Cereal
Almighty Mango Goji
which is the hit of the week.
If you're looking for a new breakfast cereal, check this one out. A recipe of chia, hemp, mango, buckwheat, banana and goji berries. It tastes delicious and can be served hot or cold. No sodium at all - compared to the specialty cereal category average of 132 mg. Just 5 grams of sugars, which are all naturally occurring from the fruit. I could also see sprinkling this on top of a salad or mixing into yogurt. This is one great cereal. Retails for $10.99 for 9 oz. Total score is 90.
