Hi, I'm Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses.
Up first, Welch's PB&J Bite Size Snacks Strawberry.
Here's a new take on PB and jelly - think of them as big soft round M&M's but with a fruit center of grape, pear and strawberry puree, enrobed in a soft peanut butter shell. One pack is 100 calories and 12 grams of sugars. How do they taste? Very, very sweet and while you can taste a hint of peanut butter the fruit flavor overwhelms the peanut butter. For purists read the ingredients before you buy. Made with natural colors and flavors.
Retails for $2.99 for 6.4 oz. Total score is 76.
Self Healthy Kitchen Grilled Drunken Chicken is a hit.
Everybody wants to be in the food business, even magazines. This product line was created by Chef Calvin Harris and Self Magazine. The recipe is very interesting, however it looks nothing like the photo on the package. The pieces of chicken themselves are less than half the size (food magazines should know better!) The chicken itself is tender and the blend of spices they use are actually very good but the rice? That came out mushy. I love including kale and golden raisins, pumpkin seeds and cherries, although you would think the way they're highlighted on the package there would be a lot more in the recipe. Retails for $4.50 for 10 oz. Total Score is 85.
Hardbite Eat Your Parsnips Parsnip Chips is a hit.
This is one of those package designs that I just love. It jumps off the shelf and attracts your attention. Makes me want a parsnip! The chips themselves are very good and seasoned with sea salt. They are a bit thicker than normal chips and before you wrinkle up your nose, don't have a strong parsnip flavor. These are perfect to use with dips. 20 chips are 170 calories and 18 grams of fat with just 150 mg of sodium. Imported from Canada. Retails for 3.99 for 150 g. Total Score is 88.
Eveia Greek Yogurt Cheesecake NY Style is a Hit.
You already know how Greek yogurt changed the yogurt business. Eveia might just do the same thing for the cheese cake business. Made with Greek yogurt instead of cream cheese this cheesecake is absolutely delicious with nothing artificial and no gums or starches. On top of that each 4 ounce cheese cake is just 250 calories and has a little over half the fat than average cream cheese cheese cake. Once again a transparent company that lists the names of the active cultures right on the package. Yay! Retails for $2.69 for 4 oz. Total score is 92.
Becky's Blissful Bakery Caramels Salted Beer and Pretzels is the hit of the week.
If you are looking for an indulgent treat this is it. Caramels that melt in your mouth with a recipe that includes Lakefront Breweries Organic ESB Beer and pretzels. Each caramel is only 35 calories and 1 1/2 grams of fat but has 4 grams of sugars. But this is so good you're going to want to buy them as gifts and for yourself. But not that often, they are expensive - the equivalent of $40 per pound. Retails for $9.99 for 4 oz. Total Score is 93.
