Hi, I'm Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses.
First up, Russo's Gluten Free Pizza Chicken Rustica
and it's a miss!
This is one of those products that would be better off if it wasn't gluten free. The crust simply is too chewy because of the rice flour. The chicken, while it cooked perfectly, looks nothing like this grilled chicken in the photo. The combination and balance of the feta and mozzarella cheeses just doesn't work either. We baked it for just over 10 minutes and the bottom browned perfectly, but there were some cold spots throughout. For my pizza I'll still stick with The Star Tavern in Orange, New Jersey. Retails for $8.99 for 15.3 oz. Total Score is 64.
Beanfield's Bean and Rice Chips
BBQ Flavor is a hit.
This recipe, made from black beans, navy beans and long grain rice is perfect. Just the right crunch and not an overbearing bean flavor, this contains no sugars, but does contain stevia. Just 140 calories for one ounce, with 5 grams of fat and 4 grams each of dietary fiber and protein. Only one complaint, I don't like when somebody says 'award winning taste' and they don't tell us what award they've won. If it is true - share it! Retails for $3.59 for 5.5 oz. Total Score is
Sumo Citrus Giant Mandarin is a hit.
The Sumo is a new type of citrus which is a combination of mandarin and orange. It was developed in Japan and is now grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It's available only February to May and is easier to peel than an orange. The flavor itself is delicate and subtle and it's also seedless. In Japan it is called Dekopon and sells for the equivalent of $8 each. Retails for $3.99 per pound. Total Score is 90.
Pukka Three Green Tea
Organic Sencha, Oothu and Suoi Gang, Whole Leaf.
is a hit.
Finally there's a green tea blend with a terrific flavor. So many of the green teas are almost bitter in taste. This blend of sencha green whole leaf, oothu green whole leaf and suoi gang green whole leaf creates a very smooth and delicate taste. As you know green tea is rich in antioxidants which can improve brain function, reduce fat, and lower cancer risk - it's called the healthiest beverage on the planet by many. Imported from the UK and Fair Trade. Retails for $6.95 for 20 sachets. Total Score is 94.
BeeFree Honee Ancho Chile Flavor is the hit of the week.
Everyone knows by now that we have a bee problem and the question is where are we going to get our honey from if it continues? This company's answer is from apples. This product, with a hint of ancho chile, is as close to honey as you can imagine. The consistency, the aroma and the taste are almost identical. One tablespoon is 16 calories and zero fat. I would expect to start to see other food companies even use this as an ingredient. This is safe for infants and made from only US grown organic apples. Retails for $6.25 for 12 oz. Total score is 95.
