Hi, I'm Phil Lempert with the New PRoduct Hits & Misses. Our first product is
Gluten Free Bagels.
I have a prejudice - I grew up eating the best bagels in the world from Watson Bagel in Newark, New Jersey. Yes I understand that people who are gluten intolerant might want to have a bagel as well, but if you're not one of those, these are not for you. The combination of rice and buckwheat flour, while tasty, is just a little too crumbly. And the crust of the bagel is nowhere near as crispy as it should be. All that said, this rating is based on being gluten intolerant. Do take note that one bagel is 700 mg of sodium and 8 grams of sugars. Retails for $6.99 for 14.1 oz. Total Score 82.
Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips
Zesty Cheddar Flavor is our first hit.
This is one terrific idea, putting the Green Giant on Veggie Chips. It's a recipe of corn with dried red and green bell peppers along with trace amounts of other vegetables, cheeses and spices. Ten chips are 7 grams of fat, just 190 mg of sodium and 2 grams of protein. The chips themselves have a good crunch, but I'd like to see more of the veggie flavor and more of the cheese flavor. What there is too much of, is the taste of salt. Retails for $2.99 for 5 oz. Total Score is 86.
Chipotle Flavor is another hit.
This is a really interesting concept and a really good recipe - take fresh garlic and pickle them and add smoke flavor. It's very tasty and very crispy and has a terrific smokey taste. What is missing is actually the flavor of garlic. That's disappointing. Don't use these for cooking, but as an appetizer or straight out of the jar. Retails for $7.49 for 12 oz. Total Score is 86.
Up next is
Newman's Own Organics
Super Dark Chocolate Cups
Raspberry Centers and it's a hit.
We're fans of Newman's Own, both their organic and conventional products. The organic line continues to grow with interesting new products throughout the supermarket. These chocolate cups are made from 70% cacao with a raspberry filling. One package which is six cups is 15 grams of fat and 20 grams of sugars. The chocolate itself is very good, not great, but the raspberry filling is exceptional. Retails for $2.79 for 1.9 oz. Total Score is 90.
Gluten Free Oatmeal Cereal
Cherry Coconut Flavor is the hit of the week.
The taste of oatmeal doesn't have to be sacrificed to be gluten free. This brand proves that. The combination of whole rolled oats and steel cut oats with cherries, coconut, almonds and other fruits and nuts is delicious. Just one cup delivers 16 grams of fiber, 15 grams of protein and 96 grams of whole grains. No added sugars, this may well be the perfect oatmeal, and the perfect mid afternoon pick me up. Retails for $3.99 for 12 oz. Total Score is 93.
