AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn has hired former Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez as a defensive assistant.
Martinez has been Oklahoma's secondary coach the past two seasons after spending nine years at Georgia, where he was defensive coordinator from 2005-09 while also coaching the defensive backs.
Martinez resigned from Oklahoma in January to make room for Mike Stoops - head coach Bob Stoops' younger brother - to become the new co-defensive coordinator.
Auburn hasn't announced what position he'll coach. Phillip Lolley recently left his position as cornerbacks coach to move into an administrative role.
Martinez replaced new Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder in that position at Georgia. VanGorder said Thursday he wasn't sure what position a new hire would coach.
Martinez was a defensive back on Miami's 1983 national championship team
