Hot Shooting Lady Mocs Down Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team shot a season-high 63 percent and got scoring from all 13 players in an 81-70 non-conference win over Austin Peay Wednesday night at the Aaron Dunn Center.

Senior Faith Dupree (Knoxville, Tenn.) with a team-high 17 points off the bench, was 8-of-11 from the field for a scorching 72.7 percent performance. She had six rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots. Senior Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.) shot 6-of-10 on the night and added seven rebounds and eight assists, ending her streak of double-doubles. Freshman Chelsey Shumpert (Paducah, Ky.) was 5-of-6, making both of her 3-point shot attempts and scoring a career-high 16 points in 14 minutes while classmate Aryanna Gilbert (Columbia, Tenn.) was 4-for-4 and converted a three-point play for nine points.

Chattanooga tied its season-high for field goals with 34 while attempting a season-low 54 shots for a 63 percent performance. In the first half, its best of the season. UTC was 16-of-26 (61.5%) in the first half and 18-of-28 (64.3%) in the second.

Austin Peay led for most of the first half, but never getting out front by more than five points. The Lady Govs led 27-22 with 4:40 to play on a layup from Alexis Hardaway.

Fifteen seconds later, Hall drew a foul and her two free throws kicked off a 16-0 run over the next 4:05 that was capped off by a 3-point play by Gilbert to give Chattanooga its largest lead of the first half, 38-27 with 20 seconds on the clock. Austin Peay’s Tiasha Gray dropped in the final bucket of the half to cut UTC’s advantage to 38-29 at intermission.

Shumpert scored Chattanooga’s first seven points of the second half, pushing UTC’s lead to 45-32 less than one minute into the latter stanza, but APSU answered back. Gray hit a three-pointer to start a seven-point run and capped it off with a short jumper in the paint to make it 45-39 UTC with 16:55 to play.

Over the half, all 13 Chattanooga players saw the court and the lead grew to 73-51 (22 points) with 5:59 to play in the game. Austin Peay battled back getting only as close as 11 points with 27 seconds to play.

Chattanooga outscored Austin Peay 48-30 in the paint and had 22 points off 11 turnovers while UTC’s bench outdid the Lady Govs’ 35-18. Chattanooga had 20 assists and tied its season-high with seven blocked shots, but turned the ball over 15 times. Austin Peay shot 28-of-69 in the game (40.6%) and had 11 turnovers to go along with eight steals.

Chattanooga will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon at East Tennessee in the final of eight consecutive road games. ETSU, a member of the Atlantic Sun, will rejoin the Southern Conference next fall after departing at the end of the 2004-05 season.
