Lady Mocs Barely Hold Off Lee University in Exhibition Game

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Trailing by seven points with less than six minutes on the clock, the Lady Mocs basketball team dug in and outscored Lee University 11-2 through the final stretch to pull out a 46-44 win against the Lady Flames Monday night in an exhibition matchup at the McKenzie Arena. 

Lee’s Jenna Adams dropped in a pair of free throws to give her team its largest lead of the game, 42-35, with 5:47 to play. Senior Meghan Downes making just her third start for UTC, drained a 3-pointer. A steal by junior Ka’Vonne Townes  put the ball back in the Downes’ hands for a layup that pulled Chattanooga to within two points, 42-40, with 5:10 on the clock. 

After a missed jumper by Adams, senior Faith Dupree grabbed the rebound and Towns knotted up the contest with a layup. Lee pulled back ahead on a jumper by Hollie German in the paint, but a pair of made free throws and another jumper from Downes put UTC up by the final margin, 46-44. 

Lee’s missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds but managed to grab the rebound. However, Downes sealed the victory with a steal as time wound down. 

Chattanooga was 18-of-51 from the field and 3-of-13 from the 3-point line while making just 7-of-20 from the charity stripe. Senior Taylor Hall led Chattanooga with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. She was 4-of-12 from the field while sinking all four of her free throw attempts. 

Dupree chipped in seven points and had a team-high nine rebounds while Downes had nine points, seven in the final five minutes, and a pair of steals. Towns was 3-of-6 from the field for eight points in 20 minutes and added two steals. 

Chattanooga outscored Lee 26-12 in the paint, had 18 points off 20 Lady Flame turnovers and UTC’s bench outscored the Flames 17-3. UTC had a narrow 24-22 lead at intermission after getting off to a slow start. 

Lee’s Adams had a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes while German had 13 points on 5-of-26 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and five miscues. She made one of her 13 attempts from beyond the arc. Madison Lee grabbed seven of the Lady Flames rebounds  and three others had five boards each. 

Lee was 16-of-58 (27.6%) from the field and made 7-of-31 from the 3-point line while making 5-of-6 free throws. The Lady Flames outrebounded Chattanooga 43-40 but committed 20 turnovers. UTC dished out 10 assists and had 13 steals while committing just nine fouls. 

Chattanooga opens the 2013-14 season Friday night against Alabama in the second game of a double-header with the men’s team. The men will tip off against Covenant College at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion.
