CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Chelsey Shumpert along with junior Ka’Vonne Towns led the Lady Mocs to a 63-56 win over UAB Thursday night at the McKenzie Arena. The win was UTC’s 29th consecutive win at home and is the second longest active home court win streak in the nation behind Baylor’s 61 games. UTC improves to 3-1 on the year and the Blazers drop below .500 with a 2-3 overall mark.
With Chattanooga trailing 12-9, Shumpert grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out. The ball came back around to the point guard and she let it fly for the first points of her Chattanooga career, a 3-pointer, to tie the game 12-12 with 8:19 to play in the first.
After a quick score by the Blazers, Towns made a steal and fed the ball down the court to a streaking Shumpert who knotted the score a second time, making it 14-14 with a fast break layup. She would score five more points in the half and was the difference at intermission with UTC leading 30-20.
In the second half, Chattanooga built up a 17-point lead, it’s largest of the game with 14:13 to play on a pair of free throws from senior Faith Dupree. The two teams would share the next two buckets to make it 48-31 with 13:22 to play.
From there the momentum shifted toward UAB who went on a 16-4 run over the next 7:28 to make it a four-point game, 51-47, with 5:54 on the clock. UTC’s points in the run came from its two centers Dupree with a short jumper and senior Ashlen Dewart with a pair of free throws. The two combined for 17 points and eight rebounds.
Down the stretch, UTC went 6-of-6 from the free throw line, including four straight from senior Taylor Hall and outscored UAB 12-9 for the final 63-56 margin.
Shumpert was 5-of-7 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers while grabbing four rebounds in 19 minutes. Towns scored a career-best 12 points with a pair of long range bombs and had five rebounds and three steals.
Hall was 6-of-7 from the free throw line and posted her ninth career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out a career-high tying seven assists in 38 minutes. Dewart was the fourth UTC player in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
Chattanooga shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field and was 6-of-18 from the 3-pointe line. At the charity stripe, led by Hall, the Lady Mocs made 15-of-20 (75%). UTC outrebounded the Blazers 41-34 and its bench outscored UAB’s 31-6.
The Blazers’ Karisma Chapman scored a game-high 15 points and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and had six assists. She was joined in double figures tonight by Ashley Grimes with 12 points, Chelsee Black with 11 and Kayla Anderson whit 10. UAB shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the field and was 2-of-9 from the 3-point line. The Blazers shot 75 percent from the free throw line making 6-of-8, all in the second half.
Chattanooga freshman Moses Johnson got the game started off with her performance of the National Anthem.
The Lady Mocs return to the court Sunday when they host SEC foe Auburn. The game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. at the Roundhouse.
