Mocs Basketball Looks For More Productive Offense
We got our first look at the Mocs basketball team lon Tuesday night with the Blue-Gold Scrimmage. UTC is hoping to re-energize their offense this year with a better game plan and lots of new faces.
One new wrinkle Coach Shulman wants to utilize this season. Let forward Z Mason shoot a few threes. "Z can shoot the ball. There's no doubt Z can shoot the ball. We'll actually put in a couple of sets with that because a four man that can shoot the ball is pretty good." Said Mason,"That's been one of the main goals of my game this summer is just trying to work on my outside shooting."
Mason's bread and butter will still be in the paint, along with Drazen Zlvaric. The Mocs want to develop inside game. Said Zlovaric,"That was our emphasis last year too. To throw the ball inside and play inside-out. We talked about it and talked about it, but it seemed like it never happened." Said Shulman,"You've got to like your identity, and our team didn't like our identity last year. Had a bad year. Nice thing about having all those freshmen and sophomores. Here is our identity. Yes sir. And that's a great thing."
The Mocs will feature five freshmen this season, and they'll bring more than a lot of new energy. Said Mason,"We are definitely going to be a lot more athletic. The guys are showing their abilities out there. So it will be a pretty good season."
Coach Shulman is optimistic about his young players too, but it's a little more tempered. "Listen, we are playing eight freshmen and sophomores. Eight. That's a lot. Bodes well for the future. But it's too many to be playing. We are going to keep it pretty simple, so they can be effective. But eight. That's a lot."
