Too bad there wasn't much thunder in the legs of Mocs quarterback Jacob Huesman. With the knee brace, UTC's leading rusher had minus two yards rushing when you add in the sacks.
"In weeks past, I probably could have avoided most of those sacks, but the get up and go just wasn't 100-percent there today," said Huesman.
Samford found their giddy up in the second quarter. Andy Summerlin to Karel Hamilton. That touchdown made it 7-0. No brace on Huesman's arm. He threw for 265 yards, but the Mocs could not find the end zone. They had 400 yards of offense, but only one offensive touchdown.
"We drove the ball pretty good, but we came up short on some plays. We took some plays for granted," said receiver Terrell Robinson.
Third quarter, Samford hits the big play. Summerlin to Chris Cephus. This one goes for 92-yards and a touchdown to make it 14-0. Mocs got their big play courtesy of the defense. Start of the fourth, and Wes Dothard with the pick and 70-yard return for a touchdown.
"We talked about it on the sidelines, we've got to score on defense. That pick six was something we really needed. I think that kind of got our offense rolling a little bit after that," added Wes Dothard.
Mocs offense got rolling on their next series. Receiver Toommy Hudson pulls up to throw. A 30-yard pass to C-J Board. Then from the three, Huesman the jump pass to Fasaal Shafaat to tie the game at 14. Went to O-T with that score. Samford got the ball first and booted a field goal.
Mocs then try to answer on their series with a field goal, but Nick Pollard's kick hits the upright. Celebration for Samford. Shock for the Mocs. They fall, 17-14.
"This loss is not on Nick Pollard. This loss is on me. I'm the idiot that didn't kick the field goal on fourth and four to make it 14-3. I'm the moron that didn't do that," said head coach Russ Huesman.
"Losing is part of football, and we lost today. But we are going to hold our heads high like the champions we are."
