Mocs golf team starts their new season tomorrow with the Carpet Capital at the Farm in Dalton. UTC enters the tournament with perhaps the most famous amateur golfer in the country. Apparently Mocs coach Mark Guhne and the UTC players are getting used to taking a back seat to Mr. U.S. Amateur Champ, Steven Fox.
Reporter in media room-"Where's Steven?" (laughter) Guhne-"I agree."
Coach can only roll his eyes. Next thing you know, Steven Fox will have his own head cover. He's still quite popular since his win tremendous win last month. Reporter-"We're still in Fox mania?" Guhne-"Yeah." (chuckles)
At least Fox isn't taking advantage of his new celebrity status with his teammates. Reporter-"Do you do his laundry?" Said teammate Davis Bunn,"No. Luckily the Europeans can deal with him. We roomed together my first two years. Now he lives with the Europeans, so anything he wants done, he can ask them."
Kidding aside, Fox's victory has done wonders for the Mocs golf program. Said Guhne,"There are tournaments that would like us to come play now because the U.S. Amateur Champion may be coming with us." Added Bunn,"Now that we've got a USGA Champion on our team. It really kind of prepares us to work harder and fight for that next level."
Fox will be a bit of a rare site at the Carpet Capital this weekend because not many golfers return to college after winning the U.S. Amateur. Said Guhne,"Most of them turn pro pretty quickly. That being said, a lot of them are already seniors. I don't think we have played against a U.S. Amateur Champion."
