Chattanooga-(WDEF) David Blackburn was named the new athletic director at UTC over the weekend. And on Tuesday, the University officially welcomed Blackburn, who arrived after serving as a senior associate A.D. at Tennessee.

As David Blackburn was introduced, he couldn't hide his excitement or his humility. Said Blackburn at the podium,"It means a lot to me to be here. I hope you guys know that and feel that." Blackburn later added,"When I went through the process, I said this is a job I truly wanted to have and be at, and I meant that. The passion came out at the podium. I didn't exactly mean for it to come out quite like that. I'm not embarrassed by that." Said UTC Chancellor-Elect Steven Angle,"I think you could see in his remarks today that he has a lot of feeling and empathy. He's going to bring all of that to the Mocs athletic program."

Blackburn spent over two decades in the athletic department at Tennessee, and it was hard for Chattanooga to ignore his resume. Said Angle,"His experience with athletics. His experience under fire. And his fund-raising background. His connections to Tennessee. His knowledge of the system. He really had the whole package."

First order of business for Blackburn, hire a new men's and women's basketball coach. Blackburn says he was meeting with both teams today to get their feedback. "I'm not going to put a timetable on it. That would be too constraining. Again, I have no agenda on which one I will hire first. Depends on how the candidates respond, and how the timing plays out."

Blackburn says he's energized to be in Chattanooga. "I think the potential for growth is really there. That combined with just wanting to be here makes me feel energetic, and I certainly distribute my passion in that way."
