Chattanooga-(WDEF) It doesn't look like the Mocs will have their best player on the floor for the Dr Pepper Classic. Forward Z Mason is still fighting a bone chip in his big toe.
Said head coach Will Wade, "It's really day-to-day. It'll be a game time decision. We are going to try to put him through a few more drills the next couple of days as opposed to him running on the side."
Mason has missed Chattanooga's last two games.
Said forward Casey Jones,"In some spurts we'll be doing good. Then the other team will flip it around on us. We don't have Z there to stop the bleeding a little bit, and that's what is not there right now."
Added Wade, "Quite frankly, we wouldn't have discovered Marty (Martynus Bareika) as much of a weapon as he is, if Z hadn't gone down. Marty is our most efficient offensive player that we have, and we are more efficient as a team when he is on the court."
Mocs open the Dr Pepper Classic against Grand Canyon, who is coached by former NBA star, Dan Majerle.
Said Wade,"They shoot it well as a team, as you would expect from a team coached by Dan Majerle."
This will be the first Dr Pepper Classic for Mocs coach Will Wade.
"Well, I've learned we are expected to win it."
Chattanooga is 38-8 during the 23 year history of the Classic.
Should UTC win their opener, they'll likely face MTSU.
Said Wade, "We're not guaranteed to play them in this tournament, but I guaranteed them that we will return the game. So we could not even play them at home, and we've got to return the game."
Sunday will mark just the fifth home game of the year for Chattanooga.
Reporter-"Do you remember what a home game feels like?"
Said Jones,"It has been awhile. Regardless of home or away, I'm just ready to play."
MTSU and Maine will tip off the Dr Pepper Classic at 4:30pm on Sunday, followed by Grand Canyon and UTC at 7pm.
