Chattanooga-(WDEF) The first day of fall football practice for Chattanooga, and the weather actually felt like fall.
There's definitely a change in the air at UTC.
The Mocs are now expected to win a league title and make a run at their first playoff berth since 1984.
First day of Mocs practice felt as nerve wracking as an IRS audit.
Said head coach Russ Huesman,"I had a headache all day today, so there's a little bit of tension and nerves there."
Added defensive end Davis Tull,"I've been playing this game for a long time, and I still get a little nervous every year just trying to get back in the groove of actually playing again."
But having 15 starters back from a team that shared the SoCon title last year will help soothe the nerves.
Said quarterback Jacob Huesman,"The meetings get easier for me personally. There's not as much new stuff I need to learn. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on it all."
Said Coach Huesman,"It's nice when you've got older guys and players that are really good that are older guys. That helps, but we're actually going to have to play some young kids this year."
UTC was picked to win the SoCon this year for the first time since 1982.
Said Tull,"Chattanooga has been down for so long. We're finally climbing back up and getting some recognition. I think it's fun. It's a fun time to be a Moc. Hopefully we can prove them right."
Said Jacob,"Train like you are in last place I guess. It's part of one of the sayings. That's kind of how we want to go about it and just go to work ever day and not really think about the expectations and the predictions."
After the Mocs were left out of the playoffs last season, their theme this year is 'Do More.'
Said Coach Huesman,"Well I made signs right after the season was over. We sat in the that meeting. As soon as that was over, we had signs with the date that we got turned down. I just put 'Do More' on there so this never happens again. If we do the same we did last year, exact same. The same results or less are going to happen. We have to do more to be better."
