It's an old cliche: Football is game of inches. It's a lesson the Chattanooga Mocs learned all to well, their playoff fate sealed by two conference losses by a combined 5 points.
"As soon as I saw Sam Houston St. show up, and Southern Utah show up, I knew we were in trouble. They weren't going to take three out of the Southern Conference. The perception of the league it just wasn't going to happen and that was the easy thing to do was to dump one of the Southern Conference teams," said Mocs head coach Russ Huesman.
Instead, it will be Samford and automatic qualifier Furman, a team the Mocs drilled earlier this year, that will represent the SoCon. The Mocs had to listen on the trip back to Chattanooga as Samford broke their hearts again.
"4th and goal from the 13 and Elon is about to win it and it just doesn't work out and Samford makes the play. I mean from there it was just we knew it was going to be a tough day today," said Mocs offensive lineman Kevin Revis.
"We had a chance to beat Samford. We had a chance to beat Georgia Southern, and we didn't get it done and that's the bottom line, and really nobody is to blame right now in this scenario but us," added Huesman.
The seniors, whose season ended in the blink of an eye, say they are proud of the legacy they leave behind.
"I think the culture around the program has changed. An 8-4 season really isn't acceptable anymore and who would have thought that five years ago? We've got a great team, we all love each other, and I think we are proud of what we've left behind," added Revis.
As the coaching staff prepares for 2014.
"We are going to be in the playoffs next year. You write it down. You can print it. You can do whatever you want. We are going to be in the playoffs next year," Huesman added confidently.
