Chattanooga-(WDEF) When pitcher Katie Henderson transferred from the University of Kentucky to Chattanooga this season, the former Silverdale stand-out really started to flourish after head coach Frank Reed decided to give her more starts.
Henderson's pitching prowess helped UTC win the SoCon Tournament title, which gave them a berth in the NCAA Regionals.
Katie Henderson admits she kind of hit a wall towards the end of the season, so why not just kick it down.
"Well, I honestly just kind of got frustrated because I felt like there were some short-comings we had during the season, which should have gone our way. And I just used that frustration to motivate me."
Talk about motivated. From April 27th through the SoCon tournament, Henderson threw 56. 2 scoreless innings.
"No, I really didn't know until probably after the App State game. That's when I started realizing. So it was like, let's just see how far I can go without scoring."
Said infielder Criket Blanco,"I think she started to refuse to lose. I think she just kept working as hard as she always had."
Said head coach Frank Reed,"The thing that's working for her is she has all three of her pitches going for her. Her change-up had been her go-to pitch. We have depended on her rise-ball a little bit. Now she has got her curve and screw working well for her."
That scoreless streak helped Henderson become one of the top pitchers in the Southern Conference this season.
She's in the top five of several pitching categories.
Said Henderson,"It's a lot of mental preparation. I just tell myself that you've got to believe that your best is better than the batter's best. You've just got to focus on each pitch and just take care of business."
Henderson is certainly glad she decided to transfer back home to the Scenic City.
"I've actually enjoyed this season a lot. Probably my favorite season of softball so far. I'm excited to be back in Chattanooga and be apart of this team. It feels good."
Said Reed,"She's throwing her heart out. She believes in herself, and you can't take that away from her."
