SPARTANBURG, S.C.---Chattanooga Mocs senior forward Z. Mason was rewarded for his dominant play after leading his squad to a 2-0 start in Southern Conference play. He was announced as SoCon Player of the Week today by the league office.

“Z. had a tremendous weekend for us,” Head Coach Will Wade stated. “I was proud of his response throughout, especially after the first half at The Citadel. We would not have been in position to win these two games without him.

“I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition than Z.”

Mason became the first Moc since Ashley Champion in 11 years (January 2003) to post back-to-back 20-point/10-rebound games. He followed a 20-point, 13-rebound performance at Furman with his SoCon career high of 30 points and 14 boards at The Citadel. Twenty-six of his game-high 30 came in the second half keying Chattanooga’s comeback from a 12-point deficit for the win.

The Nashville, Tenn., native averaged 25 points, 13.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 1.3 steals and 1.0 assists per game. He led the Mocs to their first SoCon road sweep since the 2007-08 season (January 2008 at Wofford and Furman). This is his second such award in his career nabbing the honor on January 22nd of last year.

Mason became the 10th Moc of the DI era (1977-078 to present) to grab 500 rebounds with his third at The Citadel Monday night. He now has 883 points and 511 rebounds in his two-plus year career. Mason’s tallied five straight double-doubles posting 24.4 points and 13.0 rebounds per contest over that span.

Chattanooga evened its record at 8-8 on the season, 2-0 in SoCon play tied for first with Western Carolina. The team returns to the friendly confines of McKenzie Arena Thursday night to host Samford at 7 p.m., as well as Saturday night vs. Wofford, also at 7 p.m.
