Vols Defense Overshadowing Offensive Performance
The Vols poor defense this year is sort of casting a shadow over how well Tennessee's offense is performing. U-T amassed over 700-yards against Troy last weekend, and quarterback Tyler Bray broke Peyton Manning's record for the most yards passing in a game.
Tennessee is second only to Texas A&M in total offense in the SEC. The Vols are pushing 500-yards of offense a game. Said head coach Derek Dooley,"They've got a little mojo. Tyler for two weeks in-a-row has really earned it on the practice field. He has performed well for four quarters." Said Bray,"When our offense is clicking, it's hard to stop. I think we ran a series where we had two plays and a touchdown. We're just moving at a fast pace leaving the defense all confused."
Life is good for the Vols offensive coordinator. Reporter-"Is this one of the more fun offenses you have coached since you have been at the University of Tennessee?" Said Chaney,"Yes. Yes it is. It's more fun than the other ones." (laughter)
Looks pretty fun for Vols receiver Cordarrelle Patterson as well. He had nine catches for 219-yards against Troy. C-P had only ten catches for the year heading into the Troy contest. Said Dooley,"You know C-P looks like a video game guy. He makes a lot of cuts." Said Patterson,"I just don't want anybody to tackle me. I just try to get off the tackles and get to the end zone." Said Dooley,"We got onto him a lot about his practice habits. Getting that timing with Tyler. He made a real conscious decision to practice better last week. And I told him on Thursday, you practiced great this week, and you are going to play well in the game."
Bray leads the SEC with 25 passing touchdowns. But he wouldn't mind getting in the end zone himself. "Either to rush one or catch one." Reporter-"Which would you prefer?" Said Bray,"Doesn't matter to me. They're both six, so it doesn't matter." Reporter-"Do you feel like you would give match-up problems for Db's.?" Said Bray,"Height advantage definitely. And my vertical. I can jump over anybody. I got better hops than Justin."
