After reeling off seven wins in 2011, Heritage failed to win a game in 2012. Head coach Tim James says the Generals ran into the perfect storm. "We graduated 35 seniors, and we went from 3A to 4A because of increased enrollment at our school. It was kind of a double-punch to us." Reporter-"How tough was last year?" Said defensive back Damian Goins,"It was tough, especially those close games against Ringgold and LFO."
Coach James says his club will be made up mostly of sophomores, including their starting quarterback. "Name is Dylan Bice. He's a pretty tall kid. 6'2 or 6'3. Throws the ball pretty well. We're working with his development, but he's definitely going to be that kid the offense centers itself around."
And nothing makes a quarterback smile more than talented receivers. Said Bice, "We have some big receivers this year in Christian King and Tyler Meroney. We call him cheese." Reporter-"Why is he called cheese?" Said Bice,"His last name Meroney, we like to call him macaroni, so we just came up with cheese."
Heritage certainly doesn't want another cheesy defense. They gave up thirty or more points in eight games last season. But now it appears the Generals have a defensive field general. Said James,"We've got a kid by the name of Damian Goins. Damian plays corner for us. He's going to be the stalwart of our defense. He's kind of that emotional leader. He's going to be a senior. We expect big things out of him."
Heritage will kick off the season against two of their biggest rivals in Ringgold and LFO. Said Goins,"I actually like it. We get pumped up. I don't have to worry about any other teams."
