Howard big man Brandon Walters easily fills the lane, standing 6'9 and weighing 280-pounds. And he may not be done growing into his size. Said Howard head coach Walter McGary,"Well his mother said that the doctors said that he may be seven feet. The kid has no facial hair at all. That's an indication he's going to grow some more."
Coach McGary believes Walters should grow his stat line as well. He's averaging 19-points, 13-rebounds, and six blocks a game. "I tell him all the time. You are a target. You've got a bullseye. Show people something that they haven't seen. This year he has dropped some weight. And you can tell by the way he's moving, and his stamina has really improved. Defensively, he has come into his own. Offensively, I have yet to see him have his breakout game where he has 40 or 50 points, and that's coming."
Walters wouldn't mind a breakout game as well, but he's focused on the ultimate prize. "I've just been trying to help us win a state championship. Trying to get my team that."
Walters athletic skills aren't limited to the hardwood. He's also a stand-out lineman in football. In November, he was a finalist for the state's Mr. Football Award. Said Walters on his nomination,"Made me proud about myself that I did something great."
College recruiters are looking at Walters in both football and basketball. So which sport is he leaning too? Said Walters,"I'm really undecided right now. I love both. It's just hard to choose one." Added McGary,"If he gets to be seven feet, he might need to look at basketball. I've never seen a seven foot football player."
