(WDEF) Boyd Buchanan made it to the state semi-finals last year, so they're hoping to take it one step further this season.

Grant Reynolds is starting his 8th season as the Bucs head coach. Jim Cardwell is starting his 4th season as the Bucs quarterback. Nothing a head coach likes more than an experienced quarterback. Said Reynolds,"He has been a great leader throughout the four years he has been here. He takes a lot of the offense and runs with it and does what we tell him to, and does a great job with it."

Even though Boyd has enjoyed deep playoff runs the last few seasons, they haven't reached the state title game since 2009. Said Cardwell,"There are always the deep runs we make. It's just deep runs and deep runs. We need to get there. It's time get there. It's our time to get there.

For the Bucs to reach Cookeville this season, they'll need help in the trenches. Said Reynolds,"Well, we've got to find some offensive linemen. We've had three graduate up there that were pretty good. We've got to find some of those guys."

Coaching up the lineman will be Stanley Jackson, who joined the Bucs staff after serving as Brainerd's head coach. Said Reynolds,"Coach Jackson brings a lot of knowledge to the game for our X's and O's, but he really cares about the kids. We're so happy to have him out here with us."

Boyd Buchanan will not ease into the 2013 season. They open with Red Bank. Said offensive lineman Eli Legg,"It will show us what we've got to work with. Think it will be good. I think it will be a good set up for the season." Added Reynolds, "I like to have a few games that we really have to stand on our tip toes to perform well to see where we are at. Because of our district being so small, it forces us to go out and find a lot of non-region games."
