Former Vols Coach Phil Fulmer Speaks at Baylor School
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Former Vols coach Phil Fulmer has spent most of his life coaching young people, so he enjoys speaking to young people like he did on Monday at Baylor. "Just to follow up on anything like that that might have helped them the same way somebody came in when I was there age to maybe make a point with me. It was fun. It was a fun morning."
Fulmer also had fun last week addressing this year's Tennessee team. He was invited by current head coach Butch Jones. "Butch is a guy that I've come to really appreciate and respect. All it was about was to be there to support them and show my support."
The Vols have struggled in Jones first season, but Fulmer says that's to be expected. "It's going to take time. You go through three coaches in four or five years I guess. Butch has got lots of challenges."
And what does Fulmer think of Jones decision to break out the gray uniforms this weekend? "If it helps recruiting, it's probably worth it. That's all it's about. If it gets a win, we may be in gray from now on. I don't know. We've got a big game (Saturday), and we need a 'w'."
Fulmer was fired in 2008 and replaced by Lane Kiffin. Of course Kiffin bolted Tennessee after one season for Southern Cal, and now he has been fired by the Trojans. "It's a business. Big business. I'm sure there's some frustration there. That's all I can tell you about it. I don't know enough about it to even comment. It's not what I get up and do every day anymore."
