Backed by a potent offense and masterful pitching, the Chattanooga Lookouts (25-25) pushed their winning streak to 11 consecutive games with a 7-0 defeat of the Jacksonville Suns (30-22).
The Lookouts’ offense was in high gear all night and got off to a fast start in the first inning. Corey Seager was the fifth batter to face Suns’ starter Jay Rogers (L, 6-5) in the bottom of the first inning. With two men on base, Seager put the Lookouts on the board with a RBI single. O’Koyea Dickson was the next man to the plate, clearing the bases with a double and bringing the score to 3-0.
With an early three-run lead, Nick Struck (W, 4-6) took the mound and had a stellar performance, working through five shutout innings on 95 pitches. In his last four starts the right-hander has three wins and has only allowed three runs in his last 23.1 innings of work.
In the third inning it was Daniel Mayora with a stand-up triple that scored Scott Schebler from first base. After a couple of strikeouts, Chris O’Brien came through with a clutch single to let the infielder take a leisurely jog home. Mayora is now hitting .300 on the season and is hitting .450 (18-for-40) since the streak began.
The final burst of offense came in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Lookouts added two more runs for good measure. Seager recorded his second RBI of the game when he doubled home Mayora, who scored his third run of the night. O’Brien proceeded to ground out to the second baseman, but that allowed Seager to be the seventh player to touch home plate for the Lookouts.
The Lookouts hope to keep the fire burning with RHP Matt Shelton (4-3, 4.20) starting against LHP Chipper Smith (3-3, 3.90) of the Suns on UTC Night at AT&T Field. First pitch is set for 7:15 pm.
Notes: This was the second shutout in a row for the Lookouts, and the fourth shutout in the last five games. At the conclusion of the game, the Lookouts have not allowed an opposing player to score in 20 straight innings.
