According to Mocs head coach Will Wade, UTC has one of the smallest college basketball teams in the country.
Reporter-"How do you know you are one of the smallest teams in the country?"
Said Wade,"There are statistics on that."
"Yeah. There's a website I use. A guy who does advanced analytics for college basketball. That's one of his things."
UTC has three players on their roster listed taller than 6'6.
Kansas on the other hand has nine. At some point, height matters.
Said Wade,"Anytime you play the BCS teams. We couldn't get a shot off against UCLA. You can't score over the top of them. Anytime somebody has length like that, it just alters everything. It doesn't look like anything to the naked eye or to the fan. They're just thinking these guys are missing a lot more shots tonight than they normally miss. Well they are, but there's a reason they are because they're not used to playing against that length or shooting over that length or athleticism."
Wade promises to grow the Mocs basketball team.
"We'll get bigger. You don't want to make a living playing like this. Playing with 6'5 centers."
Despite UTC's lack of size, guess who leads the SoCon in rebounding and blocked shots? Your Chattanooga Mocs.
Said Wade,"Those are more want-to than height. You can have a lot of height, but if you don't have a want-to for blocking shots or rebounding, it just doesn't magically happen. So our guys have had a good want-to most of the year. We had a little lull in rebounding, and it coincided with us not winning a whole lot. But we seem to have rectified that against Western Carolina, and hopefully we can keep that going the rest of the season."
