An enthusiastic welcome for a self-proclaimed enthusiastic coach. Will Wade has landed his dream job. Said Wade,"I really wouldn't be here today without Coach Smart and his guidance. He asked me after that particular season a couple of years ago. He said I know your goals are to be a head coach. He said I want you to give me a list of three to five schools that are somewhat realistic, and that you would love to be a head coach at. I know it sounds like I'm pandering to the crowd right now, but number one on the list was Chattanooga. Number one on the list was Chattanooga. There's no where I would rather be."(applause)
Wade gives new meaning to being a players-coach. Said Wade,"When I talked to the players yesterday, I usually let them run me over for a charge. We have done that. I told Z Mason everybody else can run me over but you, I'm not taking one from you."
Said Mocs Athletic Director David Blackburn-"All of the people he has worked for and that knew him said he has a great ability to get close to the players. To get to know them. Build their trust. And because of that, he is able to push them harder than most people they had ever seen."
Wade even had his coaching cue cards on display. It's called chaos, and you don't have to be a coach to understand it. Said Wade,"We are going to create chaos on both ends of the floor. We are going to use chaos as our brand to become one of the premier programs in the Southern Conference. Yesterday, I called all the players. When I called Gee McGhee, I said, what did you think about the style of play at VCU? He said oh, I love it coach. I want to run. I want to get up and down. It's going to be great. I said that's good Gee. I said the problem is, that's not what I believe in. We're going to play Princeton offense and play 2-3 matchup zone. (laughter) You could have heard a pin drop on the other side of the phone. I couldn't hear anything. I said Gee, I'm just kidding baby. We're going to run. He said all right. He said that's what I'm talking about coach."
Reporter-"Do you see this program as a sleeping giant maybe?" Said Wade,"I don't like the term sleeping giant. I do think there's a lot of potential here. I think there's a lot of resources here to be great. I think we can build a highly successful program."
