Last week, Ridgeland linebacker Daniel Johnson was named the male winner in the state of Georgia for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. But during a ceremony at Ridgeland on Thursday, Johnson learned he's one of the national finalists. Johnson is one of six male finalists that will go to New York in December, to see if they win the National Heisman award. This award honors kids for athletic achievement, classroom work, and community involvement. Said Johnson,"I'm so blessed to be able to go to New York. I'm so excited about going. Knowing all the great student-athletes that are in Georgia and in the United States. It's such a great honor." Said Ridgeland head football coach Mark Mariakis,"To keep a 4.0 GPA. To be a football star. Baseball star. To have the goals and dreams that he has." Said Johnson,"It really is breathtaking to know that I'm going to be in New York here in a few months meeting the Heisman guys."
