Seating Makeover For Mocs McKenzie Arena
Chattanooga-(WDEF) McKenzie Arena is getting a much needed makeover. If you head to the Mocs basketball venue next season, the seating will look a little different.
Since McKenzie Arena is now over 30 years old, it was time for little face lift. Said athletic director David Blackburn,"It does need some tender loving care. We do have to put some effort into that. It's still a great venue. People want to come here. Obviously it gives us a competitive advantage. So we are happy to have it."
It's called the McKenzie Arena Reseating Project, and it only encompasses the seating on the lower level. The old chairs are being ripped out, and new seats are going in. Said Blackburn,"The bulk of our fans are going to be sitting down low. On games where you don't have a packed house, you are obviously down low. There will be 440 seats on each side that are padded for a total of 880. So you will have some premium seating areas on the side court that are padded. We really wanted to upgrade. We couldn't upgrade the whole arena all at once. Certainly started down low where some or our better inventory is at. We hope it will really lift the place up and be special."
According to Blackburn, the project will cost $1.8 million dollars, and it should be completed around the first of September. Blackburn says this is the only "TLC" McKenzie Arena will get for the foreseeable future. So next basketballs season, UTC will unveil a revamped arena, as well as two new head coaches in the women's Jim Foster and the men's Will Wade. Said Blackburn,"We hope we have some fresh marketing ideas. New seating. Obviously a new staff. We hope that this energy will escalate and be contagious and we take off on a good run. We'll see."
