Vols Must Become Mentally Stronger
A blowout loss like that can sting your confidence, and U-T can't afford to lose anymore confidence with the schedule that lies ahead. A blowout loss like that can sting your confidence, and UT can't afford to lose anymore confidence with the schedule that lies ahead.
Said head coach Butch Jones,"Losing will never ever be tolerated here or accepted at the University of Tennessee." Especially when it's your worst loss in 100-years. Team psyche is now a major concern. Said Jones,"Right now moving forward, we are not a very mentally tough football team. Our mental toughness and our mental conditioning has to take monumental steps forward."
Perhaps no one's mental toughness will be tested more than quarterback Justin Worley's. Coach Jones announced on Monday that starting quarterback job is now open again, even to the freshmen. "What we need in our football program is competition. Competition is the greatest motivator of all. Whatever quarterback has the best week of practice will be the starter for Tennessee when we play Florida."
Jones was later asked if Worley needed a gunslinger type approach. "I don't know what your definition of a gunslinger is. I mean, I don't think any quarterback gets back there and blindly throws. You've been watching North Dallas Forty too much." (laughter) "What Justin has done, is he has waited for the receiver to become open, and then he's throwing the football. Anticipatory skills from a quarterback, that's what separates great quarterbacks in throwing him open."
Tennessee now heads to Florida as a two touchdown underdog. Said Jones,"I continue to say it. We must overachieve in order to be able to compete and win football games."
