The Tennessee Vols got what they wanted.....kind of. They did land a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time under head coach Cuonzo Martin. What UT didn't get, was an actual spot in the field of 64.
Instead, the Vols were sent to Dayton as an 11 seed, for one of four "play-in" games. Tennessee will face Iowa on Wednesday night. Big Orange figures to go into the game with all the momentum. Tennessee has won six of their last eight games, while the Hawkeyes struggled down the stretch losing six of seven, including falling victim to a first round upset in the Big Ten tournament, losing to Northwestern.
Many thought the Vols strong finish, combined with a 35 point signature win over 6th ranked ACC Champion Virginia would be good enough to garner a bid among the field of 64. Vols head coach Cuonzo Martin was surprised but not disappointed that his team must now start their post season a game early. The former Purdue star also says he knows plenty about the Big Ten style of play.
A Tennessee victory would advance Big Orange into the field of 64 to face 6th seeded UMass, and a win there would set up a likely showdown with Duke in the second round. NCAA Tournament Bracket
