New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was named the AFC's top offensive player for the second time this season.

Rivers was also Week 2's top player and has joined Denver quarterback Peyton Manning as the only players to garner the offensive award in the AFC this season. Manning won in Week 1 and Week 3.

In a 30-21 victory over Dallas last Sunday, Rivers completed 35-of-42 passes for 401 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The 83.3 percent completion rate was the highest in NFL history for a player throwing at least 40 passes. It was his fifth career 400-yard game and second this season.

Defensive honors went to Tennessee cornerback Alterraun Verner, who notched two tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in a 38-13 win over the New York Jets. Verner's three takeaways led to 21 points for the Titans. He has six takeaways this season, including one in each game.

Kansas City's Dexter McCluster was selected for the special teams award after returning a punt 89 yards for a touchdown to key a 31-7 win over the New York Giants.

Others considered for the offensive award were Manning, who completed 28-of-34 passes for 327 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in Denver's 52-20 throttling of Philadelphia; Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer, who threw for 269 yards with two touchdowns in a 17-6 victory over Cincinnati; and New England receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, who had six catches for 127 yards with a touchdown in a 30-23 win at Atlanta.

Defensive consideration also went to Buffalo linebacker Kiko Alonso, who had five tackles and two interceptions in a 23-20 win over Baltimore, and Houston linebacker Whitney Mercilus, who notched six tackles and 2 1/2 sacks in a 23-20 overtime loss to Seattle.

Denver kick returner Trindon Holliday was nominated for the special teams award after a 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Eagles.
