Preparing for your new kitten's arrival is the first step in providing a new, comfortable environment and a means of making your home safe for pets. Before you bring your new kitten home, think carefully about possible hazards around your home. These can include electrical cords, fireplaces, washing-machines, sharp utensils, plastic bags, cleaning products, and poisonous plants. A small kitten can find its way into surprising places, so be careful to keep dangerous objects out of range. It is also a good idea to have a corner already furnished with a basket and cushion. A cat carrier may also be necessary, even if you plan to travel no further than the veterinarian's office. Look for one that will be roomy, well ventilated, escape-proof, and easy to clean. Always provide plenty of fresh food and water for your kitten. Ceramic or stainless steel bowls are best because of durability and cleanliness. A litter box, cat litter, and a scoop are also essential. Even if your kitten has access to an outdoor area, it should not be let out until it has adjusted to its new home. To assure that your new kitten will receive the proper medical attention when needed, promptly select a veterinarian for vaccinations, check-ups, and advice on keeping your kitten healthy. For more information on caring for your new kitten, contact a veterinarian in your area.
