Assistant District Attorney Stephen Hatchett says allegations of inappropriate communication with a student is what sparked the investigation into Kyle Copeland.
"It is a communication that would not be appropriate between a teacher and a student.  That is the allegation," said Hatchett.
Copeland has not been charged with anything at this point, but he's been seeking counseling from attorney James Logan.
"My understanding is that the investigation is regarding a relationship between a student and a teacher, an athlete and a coach," said Logan, "I've not seen anything that would justify our discussion today, at all,"
Hatchett says the investigation started about a week ago.
On Wednesday, the assistant girls basketball coach was suspended from Bradley Central.
Since then, Hatchett says Bradley County investigators have been searching Copeland's cell phone to see if the accusations have any merit.
"You can get telephone records from cell phone carriers, you can get content off cell phones, you can forensically examine cell phones.  You can get all that and that's what's occuring in this case," said Hatchett.
"My clients phone is being searched for everything.  And they can look at his inner most exchanges with his wife.  Is that an appropriate use of the investigative power of the state?" said Logan.
Logan says they're fully cooperating with the investigation and hopes it won't be harmful to Copeland's reputation.
While Hatchett says no further details in the allegations will be released until charges are made or Copeland is cleared.
