Snow on the Lookout Mountain roads came with it's usual challenges, but the below freezing temperatures brought on even more difficulty getting the day started.
"I couldn't scrape the ice off with my ice scraper so I had to just sit there and wait for it to heat up a little bit and then I froze my hand off trying to push it down," said Lookout Mountain resident Ryan Burns.
Dade County Emergency Management was also met with a new set of hurdles trying to make the roads safe.
"It's been a little different in that we've had winter but our salt and chemicals we're putting on the road are freezing back.  You go on about thirty minutes, you come back about 45 minutes and the wind chills so great that it's freezing back," said County Executive Ted Rumley.
Crews started adding rocks to their mixture to keep some traction on the icy streets.
For the most part, accidents were kept at a minimum due in part to people simply staying off the roadways.
"You know Patrick Core, he lives in our county and he works directly with us and really kept everyone updated even from yesterday, and they've really hit it pretty much right on the nail as far as what's happening and there's a lot of people that took that, they got their bread and milk and stayed home today," said Rumley.
        The challenge doesn't end here.
Crews will continue working on clearing the roads as they battle continuously dropping temperatures.
"It's not uncommon to have cold weather here but as far as even in the teens. But when you've got the wind chill that's gonna keep us down there for a day or two below zero, that's unheard of," Rumley said.
