If you've ever wanted to learn more about Chattanooga's men in blue, now's your chance.

Starting March 14th, the police department will hold its citizens' police academy.

It's an 8-week course that meets once a week for about two hours.

You'll learn the different aspects of the police department, including homicide investigations and narcotics.

Organizers say it's free, but you do have to pass a background check.

Sergeant Wayne Jefferson, with the Chattanooga Police Department, adds, "We're bridging the gap between police and the community. Sometime it's a separate thing there, and people believe police are on their own island and we don't care about the community, we just chase criminals. That's not necessarily true. We want people to come in and see what we're really like."

You can sign up for the academy by contacting the Chattanooga Police Department at 423-643-5090.

You have to hurry.

They only have 40 seats available, and they filled at least ten of those Thursday afternoon.

Applications have to be returned by March 4th, 2013.
