CHATTANOOGA, TN, (WDEF)-Chattanooga Police Officer McFarland says they have the weapon after Woodmore Elementary teachers initially confiscated it.
McFarland,"It was not discharged, the parents were called, the school was placed in complete lockdown, which is standard procedure, then they called us, once we arrived the child was released to the parents and we took possession of the firearm"
Staff at the school say being prepared and moving swiftly kept their students and staff safe.
Le Andrea Ware,"Every second counts and so immediately going into action, you practice these things with the hope that you never have to experience them but when you do experience them then that practice makes all the difference"
District Attorney General Bill Cox has this exclusive message for parents in the Tennessee Valley about gun access.
"Its very important for everyone in the community to understand the importance of keeping your weapon secure in your home, either keep it in a safe, or have a gun lock on it so that it can't be accessed and used by anyone else in your home other than yourself"
Staff say the student has been suspended due to the schools zero tolerance policy on firearms.
