A fire overnight claims the life of an Chattanooga man.

It happened at a home in the 3200 block of Van Buren Street.

Chattanooga fire officials say a husband and wife heard popping noises coming from the back of the home.

They attempted to control the blaze with a portable fire extinguisher, but were unable to due to high winds.  The husband and wife escaped, but were unable to save an elderly man also living in the residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
