39-year-old Jasper resident Jesse Dalton was looking out for his fellow traveler in the early morning hours on Interstate 24.
A vehicle on the side of the road appeared to be broken down, so he stopped to help.
But being a good Samaritan backfired on Dalton.
"They were just pulled over and I think the emergency lights were on and he pulled over, he thought they were broke down and he pulled over in front of them and got out and approached their vehicle, and ended up getting shot and robbed," said Sheriff Bo Burnett.
Dalton was shot in the shoulder and knee, his billfold and some cash were stolen.
EMS rushed him to Erlanger for non life-threatening injuries.
So knowing the risks, is it smart to pull over and help someone in need?
We spoke with travelers at the Welcome Center to see what they think.
"Usually when it's like a lady that's got a flat tire or something like that or someone who's run off the road, had a car wreck or something like that but usually when someone's sitting on the side of the road broke down..I usually don't stop, cause you cant trust nobody these days," said James Boughton.
Sheriff Bo Burnett Says he doesn't advise stopping in most cases..
"It's a shame you can't stop and help people but my advise would be if nothing else call the local police department and let them go out and check them," said Burnett.
