Chattanooga-(WDEF) Ralph Potter returned as the head coach at his alma mata last season. This season, Potter brought back another McCallie alum in former standout receiver Joel Bradford, who will coach the quarterbacks. Said Potter,"I'm getting to the age where some guys that played for me are in coaching. That's always neat. We know Joel really well. He's young. I'm getting old, so he can relate to them a little bit better probably."
McCallie coaches will have to relate to a young team this season, but Potter says they've got some talent. Said Potter,"Well, it's a lot more fun when they get older and experience. (chuckles) And they know what they're doing."
Experience is great, but speed might be better, and the Blue Tornado should be fast. Said running back Andrew Busby,"Our backfield and our wide receivers are going to be excellent this year. We've got a lot of speed back there. Lot of speed at wide receiver."
Potter can't wait to see one speedster get his hands on the ball. "C.J. Fritz is a good example of that. He didn't play for us much at all last year. Really has bought in to what we are doing in the weight room. Went out for track this spring and won the 100 meters in the state."
McCallie will have to break in a new quarterback, but maybe the best position competition will be in the trenches. Said receiver Spencer Morgan,"I like watching the D-Linemen work. They haven't played that much. They're all trying to fight for a spot. I think it's going to be fun to watch them in camp, and see how they compete with each other."
McCallie has not had a winning season the last four years, but maybe some added depth will be the difference this year. Said Potter,"Last year, we were playing with 18 or 19 guys. This year we think we can play with between thirty and forty."
